Factors Affecting the Technical Efficiency of Production of the Brazilian Banking System: a Comparison of Four Statistical Models in the Context of Data Envelopment Analysis

چکیده
This paper uses an output oriented Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) measure of technical efficiency to assess the technical efficiencies of the Brazilian banking system. Four approaches to estimation are compared in order to assess the significance of factors affecting inefficiency. These are nonparametric Analysis of Covariance, maximum likelihood using a family of exponential distributions, maximum likelihood using a family of truncated normal distributions, and the normal Tobit model. The sole focus of the paper is on a combined measure of output and the data analyzed refers to the year 2001. The factors of interest in the analysis and likely to affect efficiency are bank nature (multiple and commercial), bank type (credit, business, bursary and retail), bank size (large, medium, small and micro), bank control (private and public), bank origin (domestic and foreign), and non-performing loans. The latter is a measure of bank risk. All quantitative variables, including non-performing loans, are measured on a per employee basis. The best fits to the data are provided by the exponential family and the nonparametric Analysis of Covariance. The significance of a factor however

Data Envelopment Analysis with LINGO Modeling for Technical Educational Group of an Organization
Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) was developed to help compare the relative performance of decision-making units. It is a non-parametric method for performing frontier analysis. It uses linear programming to estimate the efficiency of multiple decision-making units and it is commonly used in production, management and economics [3]. DEA generates an efficiency score between 0 and 1 for each unit...

متن کاملImproving envelopment in data envelopment analysis by means of unobserved DMUs: an application of banking industry
In data envelopment analysis, the relative efficiency of a decision making unit (DMU) is defined as the ratio of the sum of its weighted outputs to the sum of its weighted inputs allowing the DMUs to freely allocate weights to their inputs/outputs. However, this measure may not reflect a the true efficiency of a DMU because some of its inputs/outputs may not contribute reasonably in computing t...
متن کاملEfficiency Measurement of Bank Branches with Undesirable Output Using Non-Radial Models of Data Envelopment Analysis
Today, banks, as intermediaries, seek to attract and allocate resources to obtain greater benefit. Therefore, the bank assessment is considered as an important subject in the banking industry. Data envelopment analysis is an effective technique in evaluating the efficiency of decision-making units. There are factors among banking indices (such as receivables from resource allocation) that are i...
متن کاملPerformance Evaluation of Bank Branches by the DEA-Tobit Model: The Case of Agricultural Bank Branches in Guilan Province
This paper uses data envelopment analysis (DEA) to examine the technical, pure technical, and scale efficiencies of 12 branches of the agricultural bank in Guilan province, Iran over the period of 2012-2016. The first results indicated that scale inefficiency contributed more to overall technical inefficiency than pure technical inefficiency over the studied period. Results of return to scale r...
